Alcohol By Volume (usually abbreviated as ABV) is the standard measurement of how much alcoholic content a beverage contains. For the whole month of December, we’ll be entertaining our readers with stories on beers, spirits as well as the swankiest bars for our ABV series. Bottoms up!
Nothing beats a batch of fresh beer, meticulously and lovingly crafted by brewmasters. For casual beer-drinkers, your typical mass produced beer is good enough. Yet for true aficionados, there is really no reason to settle given the hot popularity of microbreweries on the island.
What drives a man to give up the glitzy, fast-paced finance industry to chase after the perfect potation? You’ll have to ask Darryl Chuan, a 27 year-old brewmaster who left a career in private equity to start Hospoda. Czech beers are the name of the game at Hospoda, the Czech word for pub. Full marks for the authenticity and quality of the brews available. Taking the concept of microbrewery to its extreme, Hospoda currently offers two quality brews on tap, with a third alternative of a bohemian mix of the brews.
Brewmaster: Darryl Chuan, reformed banker and purist of fine Czech potations of the malty nature
Our pick: Bohemian Dark Lager (4.5% ABV) is delicious with chocolate and malty notes, perfect with the house-made burgers
The 1925 Microbrewery and Restaurant
Since its inception in 2014, The 1925 Microbrewery and Restaurant has firmly established its reputation as one of the city’s finest drinking holes. Having moved from Jalan Besar to the up-and-coming hip Joo Chiat district famed for authentic Vietnamese food and uber-cool cafés, the bar-restaurant offers the self-same delightful brews for its thirsty clientele. Choose from a seasonal rotating line-up of 8 house brews, enjoy!
Brewmaster: Yeo King Joey, a grizzled aeronautical engineer seeking for the elusive equation to the perfect brew
Our pick: God’s Gift Tea Ale (5.8% ABV) is delightfully quirky with fruity spiced chai notes, strong and bodacious
Little Island Brewing Co
The biggest and probably most well-known microbrewery in Singapore, it is quite a journey to make to Little Island Brewing Co. Occupying a 10,000 square feet space in Changi Village, the venue comfortably seats 480 tipsy individuals. Grab the gang, tuck into some delish meals (the 15-hour smoked beef brisket has some rave reviews) and pick from a mind-boggling range of 30 draft taps.
Brewmaster: Steve Spinney, famed protagonist of Bali’s famous Storm Beer, decorated beer hero
Our pick: A Whiter Shade of Pale (4.6% ABV) is an easy drinking brew that is great to start a night-long session of drinking and debauchery. Touch of bright citrus flavours
